Movie-going has always been the popular or rather, favourite pastime of Singaporeans. This trend began at the Grand Cafe in Paris in 1895, and years later in 1902, when an Indian travelling film exhibitionist set up a tent to show his silent films to a paying audience, that was the first time that the locals in Singapore got a taste of the cinema experience. The first movie theatre in Singapore appeared in 1904 when the Paris Cinematograph was opened at Victoria Street. Eventually, more theatres appeared with Shaw Organisation operating their own 'proper' cinema known as The Empire in 1927, and Cathay Organisation raised the curtains at The Cathay Cinema in 1939. The Cathay Cinema was to be the first cinema complex as well as the tallest building in Singapore then. As the years passed, many of the cinema theatres were either closed, relocated or upgraded with newer technologies, and this set of stamps, featuring The Majestic, Capitol, The Cathay, Rex and Queens aims to bring back fond memories of many especially when these grand dames were at its prime in the past.

2006 marks an important milestone in Singapore's history. 25 years ago, Singapore began to harness information technology for its socio-economic development. Beginning with the government sector, Singapore embarked on national computerisation in 1981. The aim was to use technology to enable the government to serve citizens and business more efficiently and effectively. Subsequent national plans were rolled out to transform the economy as well as society through the use of technology. An island-wide broadband network was built in the 1990s, and it delivered interactive, multimedia applications and services to businesses and schools. The liberalisation of Singapore's telecommunications sector in 2000 also saw more innovative products and services being developed.

As a knowledge-based economy, Singapore's effectiveness in a competitive global economy hinges on talent and knowledge acquisition. Our workforce needs to be upgraded constantly so as to remain relevant and competitive. In July 2005, the National Library Board [NLB] unveiled its strategic direction for the next five years - Library 2010 [L2010] - to address the needs of Singaporeans in the new social and economic landscape. The goal of L2010 is to provide Singaporeans with a world-class library system that brings the world's knowledge to Singapore and make it available to all. The implementation of the L2010 plan aims to ensure that our published heritage is preserved, that knowledge remains readily accessible to all Singaporeans for their lifelong learning.

Food has always been well-loved in Singapore, with both the locals and foreigners, who are willing to travel from one end of the island to the other to patronise their favourite food stall. Eating has since been unofficially declared as a national pastime, and food - a national obsession. The multi-culturalism of local food, the ready availability of international cuisine, and their wide range in prices to fit all budgets at all times of the day and year helps create a "food paradise", and that is aided by the abundance of hawker centres, food courts and restaurants located islandwide. While the main-course-food claims its position in the hearts of many in Singapore, desserts in Singapore, over the years, have emerged as worthy after-meals must-haves.
