In the 19th Century, a Frenchman, Baron de Coubertin, mooted the idea of what is now referred to as the first Modern Olympic Games. Held in Athens in 1896, the event was an international meet involving 13 countries and about 300 competitors. From then on, the Olympic Games grew from strength to strength and today, it is one of the grandest events that mankind has ever staged.

According to historical records, the first ancient Olympic Games can be traced back to 776 BC, and the first modern Olympics Games was held in Athens in 1896. From the 241 participants from 14 nations in 1896, the Games grew, to nearly 11,000 competitors from 202 countries at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

The year 2015 marks Singapore’s 50th year of independence. To celebrate our golden jubilee, a series of three commemorative stamp sets is released yearly from 2013 to 2015. We launched the rst set of stamps with the theme of ‘Our Journey Together’ in 2013 and the second set ‘I am Singaporean’ in 2014. This third and nal set ‘A Brighter Future Together’ commemorates our 50 years of independence by celebrating our hopes for the future.

Early maps offer a fascinating window into Singapore’s history. Some of these provide material evidence of Singapore’s existence as an important navigational landmark and place of trade in the maritime crossroads of East and West, long before the arrival of the British in 1819. They also preserve on record the various indigenous names of ancient Singapore. These indigenous names, such as Temasek (“sea town”) and Pulau Panjang (“long island”) are part of our heritage that live on today. This stamp issue features rare maps from the prized collection of the National Library of Singapore.

Having a fun time with board games among family and friends is one of the favourite childhood memories of many. During the 70s and 80s, board games such as snakes and ladders, aeroplane chess and checkers were few of the most popular games that both the young and old enjoyed. In this stamp issue, we feature a few common traditional board games that are well-liked and played by many Singaporeans. These traditional board games are Chinese Chess ( 1st Local ), Diamond Game ( 2nd Local ), Aeroplane Chess ( 50 cents ), Snakes and Ladders ( 70 cents ) and Checkers ( $1.30 ).

Singapore and Pakistan share a friendly and sincere bilateral relationship. To mark the 50th anniversary of Singapore and Pakistan diplomatic ties, a joint-stamp issue depicting the National Flowers of both countries – Vanda Miss Joaquim for Singapore and Jasmine for Pakistan, is released.

The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) is celebrating its golden jubilee with Singaporeans.
