Most Singaporeans today take radio and television for granted and cannot visualise a time when these media did not exist. But life was not all grey even for those who lived before the era of radio and television. The average man-in-the-street did not deny himself simple forms of relaxation after a hard day’s work, and one of his favourites was listening to storytellers spin their yarns in the evenings. Artistically illustrated in this stamp issue are the different popular early forms of street story telling in Singapore.

World Cup Soccer

Issue date: 09 Jul 1982

Except for the Olympics no other sport commands as much international interest and fervent nationalism as the World Cup Soccer event. For all its present status and popularity the World Cup had a laboured beginning when the World Cup soccer tournament was first held in 1930 for the Jules Rimet Trophy. The last com-petition to be held under the official title of the Jules Rimet Trophy was in 1970 when Brazil became the permanent holder of the trophy after winning it for the third time in a match against Italy. The Mexican F.A. as hosts for the finals of the 1970 world soccer competition presented FIFA with a new trophy, the World Cup.

Singapore is so urbanised that it is easy to overlook the sheer abundance and variety of wild birds which it offers. Added to the resident species are the equally large number of visiting birds during the annual migrations through Singapore. Birdwatchers are also thrilled by the relative ease in switching from rainforest to reservoirs and parkland, mudflats and mangroves to observe birds attracted to different habitats. In this issue, the focus is on four species of Herons which are fairly common resident birds in Singapore.

National Day 2009 - Sculptures

The art of sculpture has always proved to be a challenge in the arts arena, with sculptors needing ample space to work in and to store finished pieces. However, despite the challenges, Ms Han Sai Por, Mr Tay Chee Toh, Mr Teo Eng Seng, Mr Wee Beng Chong, the late Mr Anthony Poon, the late Brother McNally, and the late Dr Ng Eng Teng persevere in the art of sculpture and the art form is still very much alive and flourishing in Singapore today. They, along with many others, have demonstrated that they have the potential to create monumental pieces that are in tune with the technological age.

Our history is a rich and expansive one – the journey of an island that has never been constrained by its shores, but has always been made from more. The Singapore Bicentennial stamp issue is released to commemorate Singapore’s 700 years of rich history
