The idea of a museum in Singapore was conceived in 1823 by Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of modern Singapore. In the same year, the Raffles Library and Museum was established and housed in the Singapore Institution (later known as Raffles Institution) at the site where Raffles City now stands. The Library was fully operational but the Museum was still to be formed.

This year, we commemorate the anniversaries of two organisations – Raffles Institution (RI) and Sport Singapore (SportSG). The Anniversaries stamp issue consists of 2 stamps – “RI Bicentennial” to pay homage to the rich history and tradition of RI and “50th anniversary of SportSG” celebrates SportSG’s 50 years of serving Singapore through Sport. RI is the oldest English medium school in Singapore, with a history that paralleled the nation’s history. This year marks the school’s 200th anniversary. Separately, SportSG celebrates 50 years of serving Singapore through Sport. It will continue to work with a vast network of public-private-people sector to enable all to Live Better Through Sport.

For many years after Sir Stamford Raffles founded Singapore in 1819, the Fire Brigade was manned by volunteers. Such a system was unable to cope with the rising demand for fire protection when the town of Singapore expanded into the surrounding suburbs. It was in 1888 that the Fire Brigade took its present form of a properly equipped professional organization. The Brigade operated initially with 2 fire stations, 2 steam fire engines and 2 small companies of firemen comprising 16 Chinese and 16 Malays.
