The Citizens Consultative Committees (CCCs) were formed in 1965 by Singapore’s Founding Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew. Over the last 50 years, the CCCs have played critical roles in Singapore’s history and nation building. In the tumultuous years of the 1960s, the CCCs, and their predecessors, the Goodwill Committees, helped calm racial tension, and strengthen communal ties in the aftermath of the race riots. The CCCs also helped improve the lives of the people by bringing basic amenities and municipal services to the rural districts. Today, the CCCs’ roles have expanded. They work with all grassroots organisations in co-ordinating constituency-wide activities for the residents. The CCCs have remained a vital link between the government and the people, with the aim of improving the lives of ordinary Singaporeans.
