Nature Series - Butterflies

Animal Series

Issue date: 18 Dec 1973

The Animal series stamps were issued to commemorate the opening of the Singapore Zoological Gardens. The stamp issue released on the 16th Dec 1973 featured the Tiger and Orang Utan (5cents), the Cheetah and Thomson’s Gazelle (10cents), the Black Panther & Sambar Deer (35cents) and the Horse and Lion (75cents).

National Service

Issue date: 09 Aug 1970

The creation of National Service (NS) was a pivotal moment to ensure national security. This stamp series, featuring the stoic silhouettes of servicemen, symbolised the shared responsibility and collective strength of every male citizen. It was a powerful message of unity and sacrifice, embodying the quiet, yet profound, commitment of a generation dedicated to safeguarding the future of their country. NS became the bedrock of a strong and capable defence force, and this stamp was its first official tribute.

In the second issue, to be released on 20 Mar 02, drawings on Birds and Fishes were selected from the collection. A se-tenant sheet of 10 designs as well as First Day Cover are available for each theme. Self-adhesive versions as well as presentation packs for the 2nd issue are also available.

National Day

Issue date: 09 Aug 1968

This set of bold and dynamic stamps, Work for Prosperity, was a visual representation of our nation's confident statement to promote an industrious and disciplined work ethic among its people. The stamps, with strong and vibrant colours featuring a stylised, graphic figure with hands firmly planted over the map of Singapore, capturedour nation's value of meritocracy and industrious spirit, the energy of our people committed to building a strong and prosperous future.

10th Anniversary of ASEAN

Issue date: 08 Aug 1977

ASEAN started off as a union of Singapore and four neighbouring countries during more turbulent times. The 10th anniversary was celebrated in 1977. The five founding member countries issued commemorative stamps on 8 August 1977 to mark the occasion. Flags and maps of the five members, regional progress through depictions of agriculture and livestock development and industrial expansion and economic cooperation across Southeast Asia were graphically featured on the stamps.

Since its official opening in December 1977, the Singapore Science Centre has functioned as a non-formal educational institution to disseminate knowledge of science and technology. In the last 10 years, it has attracted local and international visitors to its impressive displays of science exhibits, and has achieved recognition as one of the top 10 science centres in the world. As it celebrates its 10th anniversary on 10th December 1987, the Singapore Science Centre will open its new facility, the Omni-Theatre.
