Nature Series - Local Fruits

The focus of this issue is on edible local fruits. It is a subject all of us are familiar with, fruits being part of our everyday diet. It is therefore very exciting to see something so ordinary, something which we see almost everyday, depicted on stamps.

This set of stamps is as fascinating as the low value definitives. To those of us not fortunate enough to have experienced underwater life, the corals are certainly surprising sights for we would never have imagined that such wonders existed under the sea.

The Chinese Egret is considered a threatened species by the International Council for Bird Preservation in 1966. The global population of the Chinese Egret is less than 4,000.

On 1 Jul 99, Singapore and Hong Kong will jointly release a set of six stamps on Tourism. The stamps feature three scenes of Singapore and Hong Kong, respectively.

Nature Series - Garden City

Singapore's reputation as a Garden City had not come easy for this small island. What started out as a Tree Planting Campaign to green Singapore some forty years ago has transformed beyond providing just a green infrastructure. It has created recreational experiences and lifestyles in our Garden City and at the same time, helped safeguard the many vital elements of our natural heritage.

From 12 to 20 June 1993, Singapore will stage the XVII SEA Games, playing host to the 10 participating nations of Southeast Asia. Preparations are already underway and all sportsmen and sport enthusiasts are looking forward eagerly to this much awaited international event.

The Greetings stamp issue puts a spotlight on our very own national icon, the Merlion! The stamps put a fun and light-hearted spin on the Merlion. Each stamp features the Merlion posing different kinds of greetings ranging from a simple “Hello” to being really chic and modern while taking a “Selfie”! This series of stamps brings out the personable and endearing side of the Merlion in an uplifting and refreshing manner. Decked in different colours which are bright and funky, these greeting stamps are sure to add life and sparkles to any avid stamp enthusiast's collection as well as a fun collection for anyone to enjoy!

3 August 1492 remains a significant date in the history of mankind. For it was on that date that Christopher Columbus, reputedly the finest sailor of his time, set sail for the East Indies. Leading an entourage of some 90 men in three ships, Columbus sought to fulfil his dream of reaching the fabled lands of the East, renown for their jewels, spices, silver and gold. Unknown to Columbus, he discovered the New World on this historic expedition and three others which followed later.

Maritime Heritage

As early as the 10th century AD, Arab traders journeyed through Singapore waters on their expeditions to China and Indonesia. Since then, vessels began frequenting what is now the Straits of Singapore. With the rapid growth in trade, a large number and variety of merchant sailing ships also called at Singapore.

10th National Courtesy Campaign

Issue date: 06 Jul 1988

Depicted in this set of stamps, issued to mark the 10th year of National Courtesy Campaign, are some of the basic acts of courtesy. Featured on the stamps is Singa, the courtesy mascot, which has given the campaign a unique identity since its introduction in 1982. The 10¢ stamp depicts the need to greet neighbours; the 30¢ stamp the necessity to queue at service counters; and the $1 stamp shows the need to help our elders.

Butterflies of Singapore and Sweden

On 9 Sep 99, Singapore Post will honour the first President of the Republic of Singapore, Mr Yusof bin Ishak with a commemorative stamp issue. This stamp is released in conjunction with the launch of the Portrait series currency notes at a mega exhibition in Suntec City, which Singapore Post will also be participating.
